UCRH Social Work students who undertook their research placement over the past twelve months have reaped rewards for their efforts by being the runners-up best poster at the recent Higher Education Research and Development Society of Australasia Annual Conference.
The poster and associated article under review is entitled:
“Utilising inclusive student-led research methods transnationally for successful work-integrated-learning: Developing student capacity and identity regarding practice with disaster-affected rural communities”
The poster competition was tough, competing against experienced educators in a pool of 70 posters. Not only do they have a successful conference poster and many new fruitful contacts.
Their research project was undertaken through UCRH as part of the student-led, rural-focussed research about practice and education using the co-operative inquiry methodology. The 2022 cohort is the third group of research students. This research placement was initially developed as a response to students not having placements due to COVID in 2020 and each cohort has produced either a published article, conference presentation and/or research tools for students. Individual students have progressed to take on roles within a regional location or in research or sought to undertake their next placement in a rural setting.
The first student co-operative inquiry in 2020 focussed on ‘Experiences of social work students undertaking a remote research-based placement during a global pandemic’. The second Co-operative Inquiry in 2021focussed on ‘The impact of rural advantage and disadvantage on accessing services from an Australian and Irish social work student perspective’.
