At UCRH much of our focus is on developing future rural health professionals, and we always appreciate hearing how that work impacts those with whom we come into contact.
Many specialised health degrees have compulsory placements or professional experience as part pf their curriculum, giving students the opportunity to develop skills and gain experience in a supervised workplace environment. We place hundreds of students every year from universities across Australia, knowing that many of them will return work in rural areas while all of them develop a better understanding of the specific needs of rural communities.
Recently, we welcomed Jess Hatz, a former pharmacy placement student back to UCRH to present to current students as part of our multidisciplinary education program. Jess is now undertaking her pharmacy internship at Lismore’s Southside Pharmacy and was happy to tell us a little about her placement experience and how it impacted her decision to return to Lismore to intern.
The key takeaway? Rural placements provide unique, expansive experiences in a community setting where you can genuinely improve patient outcomes.
Listen to Jess in her own words in this short video.
