Our Goori Book Club, which focuses on books about or connected to Aboriginal culture, health, authors and content, has had a great start to the year.
Book Club has been in session twice already with students and staff meeting to talk about two fabulous books. Our first book was ‘Is that You Ruthie?’, a memoir written by Ruth Hegarty about growing up in the dormitory system on Cherbourg mission in SE Qld. Aunty Ruth tells her story in a very humble and accessible way that gives real insight into her experiences living under the oppression of the protection and assimilation policy eras.
Our second book was ‘After Story’, a beautiful novel by Indigenous law professor, barrister, filmmaker and writer, Larissa Behrendt. The story gently examines the convergences and tensions between the present and the past through the main characters, an Aboriginal mother and daughter, who travel to England together on a literary tour.
We are hoping to host at least one more book club before the end of the year so watch this space for more information.
