The annual Disastrous Writing Retreat is returning to UCRH in November, bringing together people from across the disaster and climate change space for two days of focused, in-person writing, connection and collaboration. Supporting stronger networks and the sharing of ideas is an important part of building healthier and more resilient communities, a goal that aligns with UCRH’s commitment to health equity.
Held at UCRH’s Lismore campus on Monday 9 and Tuesday 10 November 2026, the retreat is designed for anyone who writes about disasters, whether that writing takes the form of grants, communications, blogs, reports or academic work.
Importantly, this is a two-day, face-to-face retreat, giving participants dedicated time away from their usual routines to focus on writing in a supportive environment alongside others working in the field.
The retreat will include concentrated writing sessions, opportunities for peer feedback, and time to connect with people who share an interest in disaster-related work. Participants will also have the chance to learn from others, exchange ideas and build new professional relationships.
Previous retreats attracted researchers, community leaders, practitioners, communications professionals and students from a wide range of organisations and universities. Participants described the experience as a rare opportunity to make meaningful progress on their writing while building new connections and collaborations.
Attendance is free, with participants asked to make a donation of up to $30 to a charity of their choice and provide a receipt to support their registration.
Disastrous Writing 2026 will be held at UCRH, 61 Uralba Street, Lismore, from 8.30am to 5pm each day.
