In a newly published journal article, researchers with UCRH are among a group of academics that have reported on their examination of the effects of sleep deprivation on our stress responses. Theirs is the first systematic review to investigate how total sleep deprivation may influence autonomic nervous system responses to acute stress.
Their article, The effect of total sleep deprivation on autonomic nervous system and cortisol responses to acute stressors in healthy individuals: A systematic review, has been published in the journal Psychoneuroendocrinology.
What they found is that our body’s reactions to stress can vary – sometimes slowing down, other times speeding up. However, there’s still much we don’t fully understand, and further research is needed to unravel this fascinating phenomenon.
