This week UCRH welcomed three new cohorts of medical students to our campuses.
In Lismore, we have 11 new students from the University of Wollongong joining us for a one year placement (pictured above). The students are in phase three of their medical degrees. They will spend their time with us in a general practice placement as well as a mixture of hospital-based placements in emergency departments and in general medicine, mental health, surgery, paediatrics and obstetrics and gynaecology.
Also in Lismore, we have three new students from Western Sydney University who have arrived to spend six months in our program. These students are in the fourth year of their degrees and will be focusing their studies on obstetrics and gynaecology, and on paediatrics.
In Grafton, we have welcomed another group of University of Wollongong medical students. Like their Lismore-based colleagues, these five students will spend a year on placement in the Northern Rivers. Their time will also be split between general practice and specialty placements.
Hosting medical students on rural placement is a core aspect of our work, and allows us to inspire the next generation of health professionals to consider a career in a setting outside of metropolitan locations. In addition to their general practice and hospital setting experience, all the students will also benefit from our expansive education program offered on a weekly basis. We’re excited to get to know these new students and for them to get to know – and fall in love with – the Northern Rivers!
