UCRH’s Associate Professor Vanette McLennan is a co-author of an important international publication that sheds light on the effectiveness of rehabilitation counselling.
The paper, titled Effectiveness of Interventions Provided by Rehabilitation Counselors: A Systematic Review of Intervention Studies Published Between 2000 and 2022, reviewed over two decades of research to find out what works in rehabilitation counselling. It looked at 2,125 studies and narrowed them down to 25 high-quality ones that tested 23 different interventions.
The results? Rehabilitation counsellors are making a real difference. Fifteen interventions were found to be effective for people living with mental health and substance use conditions, intellectual and developmental disabilities, physical trauma, autoimmune diseases, vision loss and other disabilities. These interventions helped improve both vocational and psychosocial outcomes.
This research sets a benchmark for future studies and confirms the value of rehabilitation counsellors in diverse settings.
