New edition of Anatomy showcases a year of impact in rural health

We’re pleased to share the latest edition of Anatomy, showcasing a year of focused work to strengthen rural health in Australia through education, research and deep community partnership in the Northern Rivers and beyond.

This edition brings together our work across four connected themes: health equity in action; education and workforce development; research and innovation; and community and partnerships. A strong thread running throughout is the rural health workforce pipeline we support, from early inspiration to specialist practice in regional settings.

Programs such as Baribunmani Wanyi Ngay and High School Health Careers Day help local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, alongside other young people, imagine futures in health. That early interest is built on through extended rural placements, our Multidisciplinary Education Program and Simulation Centre, which continue to develop confidence and skills across medicine, nursing, midwifery and allied health. For early‑career doctors, the Regional Training Hub supports exploration of regional pathways and practical steps toward long‑term rural practice.

Living and working in the Northern Rivers means responding to disaster and climate impacts. Several stories in this edition share how our staff, students, researchers and partners work with community to understand flood impacts, strengthen community‑led responses and support preparedness and recovery, experience that also shaped our response during Cyclone Alfred.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leadership remains central to our work, alongside research and innovation that respond directly to local needs and deliver practical, place‑based evidence for rural and regional communities.

Anatomy is shared with thanks to our many partners, whose collaboration makes this work possible.
