This is the first in a series where we highlight the diverse skills, talents and stories of the students living on the North Coast for 12 months as part of the long stay medical program.
Meet Nelson Correia a Stage 3 Medical Student from the Sydney Medical School …
I’m a Canadian living in Sydney studying medicine, surfing, cycling, traveling, and trying to photograph it all. My personal favourite subjects are landscapes/nature and astrophotography, but I very much enjoy dipping into other aspects of photography.
I started in film photography in 2000, but subsequently stopped when I graduated high school in 2004, as I didn’t have a dark room at home. In 2009 I bought my first DSLR, and haven’t looked back since. This last June I upgraded from a crop to full frame DSLR, which took my photography to a whole new level. Recently, I started an online landscape photography course created by one of my photography idols, Elia Locardi.
Aside from photography, I’m also interested in video editing, and have a few videos from travelling and coffee up on my website. I’m still at the bottom of the learning curve for this hobby, but I’m hoping to take a course next year when I have the time.
About the two photos:
1) Cape Byron – Bathed in Light
Early morning shot taken at the most eastern part of Australia – Cape Byron. Shot facing west away from the sunrise to take advantage of the brilliant colours over the rocks and cliffs.
I wanted to capture the subdued surf against the jagged rocks piercing out of the right side of the scene. The pink/blue clouds were more of a luck thing, as they were flying by pretty fast and it just happened to be timed just right with the sunrise.
This was taken with the Canon 5D MkIII, and a 24mm lens at f/8 and ISO 50. A 3 stop filter was on the front of the lens to smooth out the water.
This shot was taken last May, while I was on a weekend camping trip near Mudgee NSW. It was a completely dark site, with a new moon, so pretty much the best conditions for any sort of astrophotography.
A few friends and I hiked down some farming roads after midnight to find some good foreground elements to include in the shot. Unfortunately we didn’t find any cool tractors or the like, but the silhouetted barn and trees worked out pretty nice.
This was taken with the Canon 5D MkIII and a 24mm lens at f/2.8. It was a 20s shot at ISO 6400, which added a little too much noise in my opinion.
