We’re proud to share a new publication from our musculoskeletal research team, written in collaboration with multiple Local Health Districts across regional NSW. It tackles the challenging topic of how to improve emergency department care and reduce hospital admissions for people with low back pain.
This study, published in the Emergency Medicine Journal, is an outcome of many years’ of work with our partners at Hunter New England, Nepean Blue Mountains, and Mid North Coast Local Health Districts. Together, the research team co-designed and trialled a suite of strategies including a local emergency department guideline, patient handouts, clinician education, and a rapid-access physiotherapy clinic.
The research, conducted at John Hunter Hospital Emergency Department, aimed to reduce hospital admissions and improve service efficiency. While the results didn’t show statistically significant changes in admission rates or length of stay, the study provides valuable insights into how collaborative, evidence-based approaches can shape better care pathways.
This publication reflects our commitment to health equity and innovation in rural health. It’s a great example of how UCRH researchers work hand-in-hand with regional health services to tackle real-world challenges and improve outcomes for our communities.
