During and following the catastrophic floods and landslides in February and March 2022, thousands of community members gave their time to help with rescues, short-term responses and ongoing recovery throughout the Northern Rivers. Many formed spontaneous groups to provide critical support to their communities, and many continue to operate more than a year after the events.
In this seminar we present our initial findings from a project that aims to understand this self-organised, community-led response, to identify the forms it took, the way people participated, the role it played, what enabled and supported it and the barriers it experienced. In doing so, we hope to make these lessons accessible for other communities and agencies, to support community-led disaster response in the future.
