A new paper co-authored by researchers from the Northern Rivers’ University Centre for Rural Health and Southern Cross University dives into the #BlackLivesMatter movement and its impact in Australia.
The authors explore how this global movement, powered by social media, has challenged white supremacy by sharing stories of anti-Black discrimination. The study focuses on the perspectives of Black non-Indigenous people in Australia, revealing that #BlackLivesMatter has:
- Improved racial discourse
- Raised awareness about the experiences of Black Australians
- Challenged the narrative of Australia as a ‘superdiverse, multicultural melting pot’
However, the paper also notes some concerns about the very real risk of the movement being co-opted by whiteness in an attempt to capitalise on its popularity.
