We all have ambitions to become one thing or another; here at Richmond River we have 16 young aspiring students looking to have a career in the Health and Medical industry. RRHC students attended the annual “Do you want to be a Health Professional” day, this is organised by Connect Northern Rivers and held at The Centre for Rural Health in Lismore.
The day began with students listening to a panel of specialist in areas such as, Medicine, Occupational Therapy, Medical Imaging, Osteopathy, Speech Pathology, Radiation Therapy, Pharmacy, Nutrition and Dietetics. The panel gave in depth description of what is required by individuals covering the good, the bad and the ugly around what is necessary for individuals to gain work in these fields of work. This allowed students to ask individual questions in specific areas they are interested in pursuing to assist with what area may be off specific interest to them.
The Afternoon was broken into sections of practical activities that included: Speech Pathology, Nutrition and Dietetics, Pathology. Students also did Occupational Therapy – This required students to assist another who may be recovering from an injury who may have limited use of arms, hands legs, also the difficulties of doing an everyday job like buttering bread, but without the use of your regular arm. The student’s favourite was Suturing – Students were shown how to put stitches in using all the exact equipment used in a hospital, but resewing wetsuit material, they were not up to stitching a person yet.
RRHC students were also joined by students from, Byron High, Shearwater High, Alstonville High, Kyogle High, Blue Hills College, Xavier Catholic, Summerland Christian College and Lindisfarne Anglican Grammar School. These RRHC students represented the school with pride and displayed how fantastic they will be as adults when they exit education into the work force.
RRHC would like to thank Connect Northern Rivers, the staff at Centre for Rural Health, and all presenters who volunteered time to come speak to the Students.
We look forward to next year.
