We’re proud to be part of a major international research effort that’s helping shape the future of healthcare worldwide.
Dr Mohammad Hamiduzzaman, a researcher at UCRH, is one of the global authors of a new study published in Nature Communications. The research, Characterising acute and chronic care needs: insights from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019, looked at how health systems are managing the growing demand for care related to long-term (chronic) conditions, like diabetes, heart disease, and mental health, compared to short-term (acute) issues such as infections or injuries.
The findings are striking: chronic conditions now account for nearly 70% of the global health burden, and that number rises sharply with age. This means health systems everywhere need to rethink how they deliver care—not just in hospitals, but in communities, homes, and everyday life.
Being part of this research highlights our commitment to collaboratively to promote health and wellbeing for all people across rural and regional Australia – and across the world.
